Assessment of Knowledge Prior to Initial Reading Learning

This paper presents a characterization of the performance of children from Bogotá and Chía in knowledge of language and sounds, motor-cognitive skills, vocabulary, narrative production, general development and language development. 491 children were assessed with tests on the mentioned aspects. Children had intermediate and high scores in de- velopment scales in relation to their age, intermediate scores in narrative produc- tion and low scores in language sounds and vocabulary. In schools with lower socio-economic strata, lower levels of performance were achieved in many of the areas assessed. the results are believed to be related to the children's to learning opportunities.
